I just went and bought another power cord for 70 bucks at the store. It's not actually a Mac brand cord, so it was cheaper. I guess it depends on how old your iBook is. To be honest my iBook G4 (last of 'em) has lasted nearly 4 years without any problem but the power cord failure, but I know several people who had Macbook issues in the first 2 years. It could just be my luck with this particular machine, which I expect to conk out at any moment (because 4 years seems to be the lifespan for most laptops). If your computer is still running smoothly I'd buy a new cord; 70 bucks is barely any money in light of the cost of buying a new Macbook. But if your computer is having other problems and looks close to dying, maybe the new computer is a good idea.

I went through two Apple brand chargers (the first one melted to the socket, the second had problems similar to yours). I ended up buying a cable made by Macally off of amazon for about $20 and I love it. It's much sturdier than the Apple one and it doesn't show any sign of wanting to melt

Seconding the Macally recommendation. My iBook died over Christmas after 4 and a half years, but the Macally power cord that I got 18 months ago was still going strong.
